CHAPTER ONE!!!!

*Why is Kirsti not afraid of the soldiers?

Kirsti wasn't afraid of the soldiers because she didn't understand what was going on and she didn't understand why the soldiers were standing at the corner. The soldiers also gave her lots of compliments which made her feel more proud than scared.

*How would you have felt if you had been Anniemarie when the soldiers spoke to her? Why?

I would have felt pretty scared because I wouldn't want someone with a gun talking to me. I also wouldn't want a complete stranger talking to me or whoever was with me.

CHAPTER TWO!!!!

*Do you think King Christian did the right thing when he surrendered to the Nazis? Why?

I think it was a good idea when King Christian surrendered to the Nazis because it would save lots of peoples' lives. The Nazis were such a big enemy compared to Denmark and their people. He didn't want his people to fight because there were very few soldiers in Denmark.

*Would you be willing to die to protect the leader of your country? Why?

It depends if my leader of the country was a good and loyal person to everyone and if he/she made good decisions then I would risk my life for him/her.

*What happened to Anniemarie's older sister Lise?

Anniemarie's older sister died in an accident. Her parents didn't like to talk about her. Annemarie's family has a trunk full of Lise's stuff in Anniemarie's and Kirsti's bedroom.

*How has Anniemarie's family changed after the death of Lise?

Anniemarie's family has changed because of the death of Lise. Her fiance used to sing nonsense songs to Anniemarie and Kirsti all the time but after Lise's death he had stopped. Her Papa had become more tired and seemed much older. He seemed like he was defeated.

Hi. this is Lizzy. I feel the same way about the gun and all. FYI the fiance isn't tecnally family. Also, I would risk my life too if the leader was a good one.
Lizzy S.

CHAPTER THREE!!!!

*Annemarie believes that ordinary people like her don't have to be courageous. Do you agree with this idea?

I don't agree with Annemarie. The reason why is because Annemarie isn't an ordinary person. Most ordinary peoplee would not have a footrace and most ordinary people do have to be courageous.

*What religion do the Rosens practice?

The Rosens family practice the Jwish faith.

*Predict what you think will happen next in the story.

I think that something bad may happen. I think someone may be taken away or may have to move from were they live now.

CHAPTER FOUR!!!!

*What are the answers to the questions that are the titles of the first three chapters?

The first chapter's question was "Why Are You Running?". The answer would be that Ellen and Annemarie were racing each other. The next chapter asked "Who Is the Man Who Rides Past?". That answer was King Christian. The King of Denmark. Finally the last chapter asked "Where Is Mrs. Hirsch?" and the answer is she is with her son and her store is now closed down by the Nazis. Do you really think the Nazis would just let her and her son visit? With a name like Hirsch, they probably were Jewish. (Mrs. S.)

*The title of this chapter is "It Will Be a Long Night." Why was it a long night?

It was a long night because Ellen Rosen was going to stay with Annemarie and her family. The Nazis soldiers came and 4:00a.m. and woke up everyone but Kirsti. The questioned Annemarie's parents asking if they knew anything about Ellen's Family but they said "No."

*Why does Ellen spend the night with Annemarie?

Ellen has to spend the night with Annemarie and her family because Ellen's Family were Jewish and the Nazis were trying to get rid of all the Jewish. They got a list from the church which Ellen and her family belonged too. Her parents had to go with Peter and hide with him while Ellen pretended to be part of Annemarie's family.

CHAPTER FIVE!!!!!

*Why do the soldiers come to the Johansen's apartment?

The soldiers go to the Johansen's apartment asking if the know where Ellen and her family are.

*What do you think they expected to find?

I think they expected to fine Ellen and her family there in hiding.

*Why does Annemarie tear the necklace from Ellen's neck?

It was a symbol of the Star of David. I think that the symbol is a Jewish symbol. Annemarie had to yank it off because Ellen never takes the necklace off so the latch was clenched together.

*When Papa rote the picture from his photo album, what was he trying to prove?

When Papa tore out the pictures from the photo album they were pictures of Annemarie, Kirsti, and Lise when they were all babies. The soldier got suspicious because of Ellen's Dark Hair but lucky for her Lise's hair was dark when she was little.

*Do you think Annemarie is brave?

I think Annemarie is very brave because she speaks up for herself and isn't afraid to do something. She is also quite shy but I think later on in the story she will over come the shyness.

*Why does Mama want to travel to Uncle Henrik's house alone?

It would be safer and they wouldn't suspect a woman and her children. If they were watching the Johansens and see all of them leave and no one's in the apartment and Papa doesn't leave his office in the morning. They would know something was up.

*What are Papa and Uncle Henrik really talking about when they talk about "cigarettes"?

The one pack of cigarettes ment that Ellen was the one who they were speaking of. They were using a different word so that if a soldier was listening to their conversation they would only here "cigaretttes". Well, that's why I think they were saying cigarettes rather than Ellen.

Hi Abby, This is
Emily and I just wanted to let you know I like how you explained all the questions in chapter 5 and all the other chapters!!!
Emily :-)

CHAPTER SIX!!!!

*For what reason is Uncle Henrik's home a good place to take a Jewish refugee?

Her saftey is important and Uncle Henrik's home is a pretty safe place for Ellen to stay. There aren't as many soldiers there and Ellen is with her best friend Annemarie. Annemarie and her mother and uncle are helping Ellen through such a hard time. They are with her every second and case if she is sad or is fusturated about what's going on. Why is it a safe place?
What aspects of his house or where he lives makes his house an ideal place for Ellen? (Mrs. S)

*Describe how you felt when you read this chapter.

I felt happy that Ellen would probaly be safe and protected at Uncle Henrik's home. She also had a great friend that was there for her and her friend's parents which helped Ellen's whole family be safe.

*Why are Mama and Annemarie frightened when Kirsti decides to talk to the soldiers on the train?

When the soldiers asked if they are traveling for the New Year's Eve. Mama and Annemarie were frightened when Kirsti decided to talk to the soldiers because they thought that she would say that Ellen was celebrating her New Year's Eve. Ellen celebrates her New Year's Eve at a different time because she is Jewish.

*What do you think the soldiers expected Kirsti to say?

I think they expected Kirsti to say that Ellen was celebrating New Year's Eve so that they would know if Ellen is Jewish or not.

CHAPTER SEVEN!!!!

*How do Ellen and Annemarie feel as they explore Gilleleje?

They felt really happy. They enjoyed looking at Sweden on the other side and they didn't think about anything negative.

*Why is the visit different for Annemarie than other times she visited Uncle Henrik?

They were different because she had Ellen there with her and her father wasn't there. There were also soldiers there.

*Describe Uncle Henrik and Mama's relationship.

I think that Uncle Henrik and Mama have a really tight relationship. They are very close. They talk about lots of memories and have lots of fun just talking about stuff.

CHAPTER EIGHT!!!!

*What two statemants does Uncle Henrik make that worrys or puzzle Annemarie?

Why they are staying in Uncle Henrik's fishing boat and if Great-aunt Birte really exsisted.

*Do you agree with Annemarie that Great-aunt Birte doesn't exist?

No I don't because I think Great-aunt Birte does exist and that her Uncle and Mama are not joking. I think it might be a real tradition that Great-aunt Birte's casket will stay in the living room before having the burial.

*What do you think Uncle Henrik means by "Tomorrow will be a day for fishing"?

I think that means that they will be leaving to go to somewhere else. They might be taking Ellen somewhere where the Nazis soldiers aren't.

CHAPTER NINE!!!!

*What do you think "mourners" are?

In the paragraph when it said "mourners" I think it mean't the Jewish people that were coming but "mourners" in the paragraph was sorta like a code word. The real meaning for "mourners" is like people who are sad.

*How does Uncle Henrik explain to Annemarie why he and Mama lied to her about Great-aunt Birte?

Uncle Henrik said "I think you are like your mama, and like your papa, and like me. Fightened, but determined, and if the time came to be brave, I am quite sure you would be very, very brave. It is much easier to be brave if you do not know everything. And so your mama does not know everything. Neither do I. We know only what we need to know.

*Find a line from this chapter that shows Annemarie is maturing.

When she found out that Uncle Henrik and Mama were lying about Great-aunt Birte. On one of the pages about Uncle Henrik and Mama lying it said "Annemarie nodded. She felt older, suddenly."

CHAPTER 10!!!!

*What familiar phrase is in the psalm that Peter reads to the "mourners"?

"He who numbers the stars one by one...". I think that is similar to the title of the book.

*How do you think most of the people at Uncle Henrik's house felt during the wake?

They were problay thinking when is this going to be over or what if the soldiers come?

*How does Mama keep the soldier from opening the casket?

Mama says that Great-aunt Birte died of typus and that the doctor said to keep the casket closed because the germs might still be able to spread.
*Reread the psalm and Annemarie's reaction to the significanse of the title of this book?

Annemarie's reaction was she was unfamiliar to the psalm and wanted to listen to it. She wanted to understand it and tried to forget about the Nazis. She tried not to cry and tried to be brave like everyone else. When it said "he who numbers the stars one by one..." was similar to the title of the book which was "Number The Stars". I think that means that all the Jewish people are scattered around the earth sort of like the stars in the sky and that the Nazis are trying to count each and everyone one or trying to get rid of everyone which I do not like.
I really don't think any reference to the Nazis is appropriate, Abby. It was just referring to the Jewish belief that they were chosen to be God's special people and he cared about them enough to keep track of them like He takes care of the stars.

The last sentence of the question was a lot similar to Lizzy's because I did not know what to right for it or what it mean't.
~Abby

Hey Abby. This is Lizzy. First of all, I thought you said you did the wiki through chapter 14. Second of all, I can't seem to get the chapter 12 questions. If you seem to get them please tell me. Thanks ~Lizzy.

I got the questions for chapter 12. Thanks anyway
Lizzy.

CHAPTER TWELVE!!!

*Do you think Annemarie will meet any soldiers on the way to Uncle Henrik's boat?

I think it maybe be a possibility for her to run into a soldier on the way to the boat because when I read the last chapter. The soldiers sorta seemed suspisous.

*What observations about waiting does Annemarie make in this chapter?

Some observations that Annemarie made were that sometimes waiting is safer than to go with.

*Why does Annemarie worry about her mother's safety?

She worries about her mother's safety because she could be taken away or killed by the soldiers. She may have gotten seriously hurt.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN!!!!

*Why does Annemarie volunteer to take packet to Uncle Henrik?

She volunteered because her mom was very badly hurt and could not walk. She could also run because it was getting lighter out and she knew the path very well.

*Why doesn't Mama tell Annemarie what is in the basket?

Mama might tell Annemarie later or it might be for a safety reason. Mama might not know what is in the baket either.

You're doing good work, Abby. Keep responding with good answers. (Mrs. S)

Don't you think the last question on Chapter 13 also might have to do with the bravery thing?
Lizzy.

Chapter Fourteen!!!!

There is a reference to the story of Little Red Riding Hood in this chapter. Which characters from the story are like Red Riding Hood and the wolf?

The Nazis Soldiers are like the wolf in Little Red Riding Hood. Little Red Riding Hood is Annemarie in the story.

In this chapter we see that Annemarie is confronted with reality and begins to less of a child. What is the reality she confronts?

She is facing all the stuuf that is happening. She faces all the soldiers she meets.

Chapter Fifteen!!!!

*What is your reaction to how the soldiers treated Annemarie?

I was suprised that they would do that to a little girl. I wouldn't suspect strangers to do that to a kid that they don't even know.

*List three times when the German soldiers are rude to Annemarie.

When they don't say Annemarie's pretty but they say that to her sister. When they came into the Rosen's house and ripped up the pictures and stomped on them. When they took all the food out of the basket and fed it to their dog.
This questions referred to the scene in the woods, not earlier scenes.

*Why does Annemarie act like Kirsti?

She acted childish and pretended she was doing something innocent so that the soldiers wouldn't think she's was trying to hide something.

*Did anything Uncle Henrik tell Annemarie surprise you? What?

I think nothing really suprising happpened when Uncle Henrik told Annemarie things.

Didn't the explanation about the secret of the handkerchief surprise you?

Chapter Sixteen!!!!

*How does Uncle Henrik define “brave” to Annemarie? Based on this definition, is Annnemarie be considered brave?

When Uncle Henrik defined "brave" to Annemarie. He said that you shouldn't think about the dangers. Just think about what you must do. I think Annemarie is considered brave because she faced different soldiers three times. She was scared but she didn't think about what the dangers might be if she got caught. She stayed strong even though she was frightened.

*What secret information does Uncle Henrik share with Annemarie about the Rosens?

Uncle Henrik told Annemarie that the Rosens and the other Jewish were hidden underneath. They were cramped but they were in a safe area. It was below the deck and they opening where they got in was covered up so they soldiers couldn't find them.

*Describe something funny that happens in this chapter.

I thought it was funny when the soldiers and Annemarie thought there was a secret note in the envolope.
It was also funny when the cat fell into the pail of milk.

Chapter Seventeen!!!!

*This chapter takes place two years later after the war. How do the Danish people include their Jewish neighbors in the celebration?

The Danish people included their Jewish neighbors in the celebration by celebrating that the Jewish people don't have to run or hide anymore.

*How did Peter die? How did Lise really die?

Peter later had gotten caught by the Nazis soldiers and killed. He was shot. Lise died when she was having a secret meeting and the Nazis soldiers found a group including Lise. Lise and some other people ran but there were these soldiers in a car and they ran her over and killed her.

*Where does Annemarie hide Ellen’s Star of David necklace?

Annemarie hid Ellen's Star of David necklace in the trunck that held Lise's stuff.

Afterword!!!!

*List three incidents in the story that were actual historical events.

They Jews were actually being captured and killed. Many of the Jewish people did escape in boats to Sweden. The Nazis soldiers did use dogs to sniff out Jewish people that were hiding.

You did a good job answering most of the questions, Abby. A-
